In today's world of home based business and network marketing. The key word is marketing.
The oldschool way of network marketing was telling all of your friends and family and getting them to get leads for you. Then you call or arrange a meet and try to close the sale. Nowadays people are way too skeptical and generally aren't looking to create a business and give it the time and tools it requires. They figure if they buy the product and tell a few people that their business should explode.

We all know that with internet and social media times have changed. You need to focus your marketing. Getting a few sales from friends and family is nice and can give you some fast start bonuses (depending on your compensation plan) however these people are usually short lived in the business and basically give you false statistics.
As a network marketer nowadays you want to concentrate your marketing to people that are already looking for a new home based business and are motivated and willing to spend the time it requires to get it up and running. The key people you are looking for are current network marketers or people with an entrepenurial spirit. People that are paid on commissions for example are far more apt to be successfull at network marketing than people that just want to work a job.
We need to learn as an industry who to focus on as our prospects. The best way to do this is to create a sales funnel that will bring people that are searching for opportunities to you.

      People that understand that a sales side and a business side are two very different things and
      will get you different results in the end.
      People that want to invest time and money into their business to make it grow
      People that are willing to take the time to work on themselves
      People that understand that they will need to be a leader to their team.
      People that understand that being a leader means spending less time on getting your own   
      distributors and spending more time on training their downlines will help them more.
      People that believe in helping people.
Above are the qualities that you are looking for in a distributor. If the people that you are meeting or networking with do not have the above qualities then let them know about your business opportunity but consider that they may actually be interested in using the product. Sales can keep you growing while you find the right distributors. Preferred customers should be nurtured to keep them on the product but decide where you want to spend your time. You will need distributors in order to get your organization to the level you desire it to be.
I'm not saying to shut down and just search out the people with the above qualities but I am saying to take stock of who you are talking to and learn to recognize their needs and market to what they would want. This way you aren't offending people you are giving them both options but are focusing on the one that they would succeed at best.
This business is about people helping people. Learn to target your marketing and you are well on your way to be a network marketing success.
